Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said that he expects the energy transition cooperation with Japan to be followed up and accelerated.

The acceleration of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan can be fulfilled through investments in new and renewable energy development projects, such as those utilizing hydrogen, biomass, and methanol, he pointed out at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java on Friday.

"In the energy and environmental sectors, I expect an acceleration and follow-up of energy transition cooperation through investments in new renewable energy such as hydrogen, biomass, and methanol,” he remarked.

President Jokowi also expressed his intention to finalize the cooperation and draw up a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the environmental preservation sector.

Earlier, Indonesia and Japan had initiated preliminary cooperation in energy transition through a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the Realization of Energy Transitions, which was signed by the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, and the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), Hagiuda Koichi, in January 2022.

The MoC outlines the preparation for the energy transition road map toward clean emissions, based on each country's national targets, development, and distribution of technologies that can contribute to a realistic energy transition, such as hydrogen, ammonia fuel, carbon recycling, and CCS/CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage).

In the MoC, Indonesia and Japan have also agreed to support the efforts of multilateral forums to speed up technological cooperation that contributes to a realistic energy transition, policy development, human resource development, and knowledge sharing of energy transition and technologies.

President Jokowi’s meeting with PM Kishida on Friday in Bogor, West Java, was part of PM Kishida's visit agenda.
