Jakarta (ANTARA) - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif launched a 275-megawatt gas and steam power plant in Tenayan Raya Industrial Complex, Pekanbaru, Riau, on Thursday.

Deputy Governor of Riau, Edy Natar Nasution; president director of state-owned electricity firm PT PLN, Darmawan Prasodjo; president director of PT Medco Energi Internasional, Hilmi Panigoro; and president director of PT Medco Power Indonesian, Eka Satria, attended the inauguration event.

"The Riau Gas and Steam Power Plant is a (form) of our commitment to provide clean and environmentally friendly energy," Panigoro said in a press statement received here on Thursday.

The project is in line with Medco Energi’s commitment to pursue carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2050 and Scope 3 by 2060, as well as support the government's energy transition program, he added.

The power plant in Riau is owned and operated by PT Medco Ratch Power Riau (MRPR), a joint venture created by Medco Power Indonesia and Ratch Group. PT MRPR has been operating the gas and steam power plant commercially since February 2022.

The power plant is part of a national strategic project connected to the electricity network on Sumatra Island.

As much as US$290 million was disbursed for the construction of the power plant. The sponsors worked with international financial institutions for funding this project. They included the Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Finance Corporation (IFC), MUFG Bank, and Sumitomo Mitsui banking company.

Satria said that the power plant employs a combined cycle engine based on the latest technology to produce electricity in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner, while meeting international standards for exhaust emissions and environmental quality management.

He added that the completion of the gas and steam power plant serves as a token of his company's commitment to aiding the government's program to develop extensive electricity infrastructure. The achievement would also add to its portfolio of gas-to-power business.
