Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Informatics Ministry encourages public relations (PR) officials to understand the importance of social media security, considering that social media is an effective platform to manage public participation.

By understanding the importance of social media security, the management of an institution's social media account can be improved, the Ministry's Public Information and Communication Director General Usman Kansong stated.

"Along with the increasing demand of the internet, the danger to the security of personal data also rises," he noted on Wednesday.

"Much like personal social media accounts, government institution accounts also become a hacking target by irresponsible parties with various goals and motives," he said during the Ministry/Institution Official Social media Account Security Strategy event.

Social media account hacking incidents can have negative impacts on the public's trust of the government. Sometimes, social media account hackers do not have a clear goal and only break into websites and servers to test their skills.

"Within various cases, the perpetrators are youngsters who sometimes do it without any clear intent, only to test their skills," Kansong remarked.

To this end, he urged social media account managers to understand the methods used to secure accounts. With this, the security and resiliency of social media accounts owned by government institutions can be optimized.

While comfort decreases as a result of having to understand security, it is expected that this can encourage public relations officials to work with one another.

Officials can carry out transfers of knowledge to strengthen security in the digital space.

Kansong also emphasized the importance of synergy between every government's public relations officials, which should also be done to expedite information transfers through government institutions' information channels.

"I urge all of you to broadly disseminate the information received from this forum, whether through website and social media accounts owned by your respective institutions, with casual and interesting packaging," he said.
