Based on information from local residents, the suspected cause of the fire was an exploding gas cylinder at one of the houses.Kendari (ANTARA) - A fire destroyed at least 26 homes near a landfill in the Southeast Sulawesi provincial capital of Kendari on Thursday morning.
The houses, which were mostly owned by cleanliness workers and scavengers, were empty when the fire broke out at around 8:35 a.m. local time.
Head of the Kendari City Fire Department La Ode Aidir Rere confirmed that 26 homes had caught fire.
Quoting information from the local residents, Rere noted that the fire broke out after a gas cylinder exploded in one of the houses. The fire later spread to the nearby houses.
"Based on information from the local residents, the suspected cause of the fire was a gas cylinder exploding at one of the houses," he revealed.
No fatalities or injuries were reported in the blaze. However, several vital documents belonging to the residents got scorched.
"We deployed five fire trucks during the fire. It took less than one hour to put out the blaze," he remarked.
