Thus, the revival of tourism sector can be maintained well to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as creative economy players.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno stated here on Tuesday that Indonesia had proposed to become a member of the Executive Board of the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UNWTO) for 2023-2027.

The proposal was made on account of the fact that the government's policies in mitigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and transforming the tourism sector had been regarded by the international community.

"The United Nations has invited us (to become the executive board member) in its General Assembly session, and the UNWTO considers our strategic policies as a breakthrough that can be implemented as a best practice," he remarked.

Hence, Indonesia was supported to propose to become a UNWTO executive board member.

The minister expects that Indonesia's role as a member of the board can encourage discussion on quality and sustainable tourism as well as community-based tourism that can create numerous employment opportunities.

"Thus, revival of the tourism sector can be maintained well to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as creative economy players," he affirmed.

Earlier, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry had discussed several collaboration opportunities with the UNWTO on the sidelines of the 4th Joint Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UNWTO Commission for South Asia (34th CAP- CSA) in Malé, Maldives, on Tuesday (June 14, 2022).

On the occasion, the ministry’s secretary, Ni Wayan Giri, met with Secretary General of UNWTO Zurab Pololikashvili to convey her gratitude for the organization's support for Indonesia’s 2022 G20 presidency.

"We also invite the secretary general of the UNWTO to attend the G20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting on September 26, 2022, which will be held back-to-back with (the commemoration of) World Tourism Day," she stated.

The G20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting is one of the minister-level meetings ahead of G20 Summit that is expected to create a concrete program based on best practice that can be implemented in collaborations among G20 members.

In addition, Giri held a meeting with Director of the Regional Department for Asia and the Pacific of UNWTO, Harry Hwang, to discuss preparations for Indonesia to propose to become the UNWTO Executive Board member representing the East Asia and Pacific region for 2023-2027.

Furthermore, technical preparations on conferences, seminars, and workshops for the commemoration of 2022 World Tourism Day -- celebrated on September 27 -- were also discussed.

"Hopefully, through the implementation of the activity, Indonesia’s tourism sector will become more advanced," the ministry’s secretary added.
