Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has informed that there are two potential tropical cyclones developing in the northern part of Indonesia, which may cause high waves in the northern waters of the equator.

The results of the Jakarta Tropical Cyclone Warning Center’s (TCWC’s) monitoring had shown that the potential tropical cyclone 97W was growing over 17.2 degrees north latitude and 117.5 degrees east longitude over the South China Sea,BMKG said in a press release here on Wednesday, .

It is estimated to have a maximum speed of 20 knots (37 kilometers per hour) and a central air pressure of 1003.5 hectopascal (hPa).

Meanwhile, the potential tropical cyclone 98W is growing over the Pacific Ocean, in the north of West Papua province, at 6.3 degrees north latitude and 132.6 degrees east longitude.

The maximum speed of the tropical cyclone is also 20 knots (37 km per hour) and central air pressure 1008 hPa.

BMKG said that the potential tropical cyclone 97W is moving towards the west and northwest, while the potential tropical cyclone 98W is moving towards the north. Thus, they are moving away from Indonesian territory.

Furthermore, both the potential tropical cyclones are predicted to develop into tropical cyclones in the next 24 hours.

Deputy for meteorology at BMKG, Guswanto, noted that within the next 24 hours, the potential tropical cyclone 97W could cause high sea waves in the South China Sea, which could reach a height of 1.25 to 2.5 meters (m).

Meanwhile, the potential tropical cyclone 98W is predicted to raise the height of sea waves in the northern part of Maluku Sea, the northern waters of West Papua and Papua provinces, as well as the eastern waters of the Philippines to 1.25 to 2.5 m, he added.
