Mamuju, West Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Government of West Sulawesi Province has readied a total of 125 hectares of land for the program of planting 1.2 million mangrove trees.

"Lands, measuring a total of 125 hectares, have been readied to become the locations for the planting of 1.2 million mangrove trees as part of the efforts to preserve the environment on the coast of West Sulawesi," Head of the West Sulawesi Activities Office, Hamzah, stated here on Sunday.

According to Hamzah, the West Sulawesi government also held a coordination meeting to ensure the success of the mangrove planting activity, scheduled to be held in November 2022.

Acting Governor of West Sulawesi Akmal Malik stated that the mangrove planting activity will involve 10 thousand students from 100 high schools and 45 agricultural vocational schools in the province.

Malik noted that the activity aims to instil a sense of love for planting plants among students to preserve the environment.

Apart from involving students, the government will also involve several technical implementing units in the agriculture sector as well as community organizations.

"The West Sulawesi Education Office will mobilize students to plant trees simultaneously in the coastal areas prepared by the West Sulawesi Forestry Office, which are located near the students' schools," he stated.

In addition, the West Sulawesi Forestry Office will be tasked with providing training to students as well as community organizations in cultivating mangrove seeds that will be planted.

He remarked that West Sulawesi is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, so its coastal areas must be protected by planting mangrove trees.

He said that the West Sulawesi government will continue to innovate in producing development programs that only require minimal cost but can have an impact on development and the fulfilment of community needs, such as the mangrove planting activity.

"The economy must be built with various innovations. There are many ways that can be applied," the acting governor remarked.

Preserving nature will impact the economy and offer benefits for future generations, he added.
