"What President Joko Widodo stated (in his remarks) gives us assurance that the 2024 General Elections will proceed peacefully without identity politics," Fawaid said on the sidelines of the annual session of MPR and the joint session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representatives Assembly (DPD) at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The deputy speaker also lauded the President's appeal against identity politics as well as discriminatory and divisive conduct during the election.
In line with the President’s appeal, he urged residents and political parties to help ensure the safe and peaceful conduct of the 2024 elections.
"Hence, we appeal to residents and political parties to refrain from identity politics. We want the 2024 General Elections to proceed peacefully and joyfully," Fawaid said.
Earlier, the President appealed to residents and political elites to commit to strengthening the national democracy and bolstering national consolidation by avoiding identity politics and the politicization of religious faiths to prevent social polarization.
"I remind everyone to avoid identity politics, to avoid religious politics, and to avoid social polarization. Our democracy must be more mature and national consolidation must be strengthened," the President said in his address during the MPR’s annual session here on Tuesday.
Widodo also urged all parties and stakeholders to support electoral phases conceived by the General Elections Commission (KPU) for the 2024 elections.
"Stages of the general elections are currently prepared by the General Elections Commission, and we must support the whole process," the President said.
