Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) urged all parties and stakeholders to support electoral phases conceived by the General Elections Commission (KPU ) for the 2024 General Elections.

"Stages of the General Elections are currently prepared by the General Elections Commission, and we must support the whole process," the president stated in his address during the Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) and the Regional Representatives Assembly (DPD RI) at the Parliament Complex here, Tuesday.

The president reminded residents and political elites to commit to strengthening national democracy and bolstering national consolidation by avoiding identity politics and politicization of religious faiths to prevent social polarization.

"I remind everyone to avoid identity politics, to avoid religious politics, and to avoid social polarisation. Our democracy must be more mature, and the national consolidation must be strengthened," the president affirmed.

The head of state also appealed to national institutions to maintain and develop democracy further and to reinforce the national ideology of Pancasila.

On Sunday (August 14), the KPU RI closed the party registration process for the 2024 General Elections.

KPU RI Commissioner August Mellaz noted that 40 political parties had registered to participate in the general elections.

Of the total political parties, registrations of 24 political parties were deemed complete, while the process was still under verification for another 16 political parties, he noted.

Moreover, KPU RI Commissioner Idham Kholik reiterated that there would be no extension in the period for the registration of political parties as candidates for the 2024 general election.

"We have stressed this several times in our explanations to the public. We told (political parties) to complete the dossiers because the registration period would not be extended. We will give time until 23:59 WIB (Western Indonesian Standard time) today," Kholik noted on Sunday (August 14).

The KPU would gather the registration documents on Monday (Aug 15) morning. However, if the documents uploaded onto the Political Party Information System (Sipol) are incomplete by 23:59 WIB, then the registration process of the party cannot be continued, he explained.
