Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo made the remarks at the launch of the domestic government credit card and international QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) payment system in Jakarta on Monday.
"Accelerating the national digital economy and finance as well as strengthening international cooperation, especially in ASEAN, is in line with Indonesia's G20 Presidency," he said.
BI on Monday initiated the domestic government credit card and international QRIS payment system, which was officially launched by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
The domestic government credit card would enable the purchase of goods and services by the central and regional governments through the government credit card payment scheme, with transactions processed domestically, Warjiyo explained.
The launch of the credit card is a follow-up to Presidential Instruction No. 2 of 2022 regarding the use of non-cash transactions for government spending, both at the center and in the regions, and the use of domestic products, he said.
In the early stages, the implementation of the domestic government credit card will be carried out through the QRIS interconnection, which is supported by 85 payment system operators and covers 20.3 million business shops or merchants.
“So, this can really be done immediately. At the same time, QRIS has also been carried out to support the Proudly Made in Indonesia Movement, especially for MSME (micro, small, and medium enterprise) players to be able to transact digitally," Warjiyo said.
QRIS, which was launched in May 2019, has become the sole standard payment system in force in Indonesia, he noted.
QRIS users are also dominated by MSME actors, he said.
In addition to QRIS, BI has launched the Indonesian Open API National Standard and the BI-Fast retail payment system infrastructure.
Regarding QRIS connections between countries, Warjiyo said that Indonesia has received commitments from four ASEAN countries, namely Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, on connecting payment systems.
"QR, fast payment, currency, we will connect this. Today, we start with full implementation with Thailand. We have tested QR Indonesia with QR Thailand. So, for tourism transactions, MSME trade can connect QR," he informed.
In addition, the application of the QR payment system connection has been piloted with Malaysia since January 2022, while it is being finalized with Singapore, he said.
According to BI data, in just one year, the value of QRIS transactions spiked 305.49 percent to reach Rp4.52 trillion in February 2022. Meanwhile, the volume of QRIS transactions grew 268.64 percent (year on year) to 54.91 million the same month.
