Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin symbolically handed over Rp1.1 trillion in compensation from the Workers' Social Security Agency (BPJAMSOSTEK) to South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru in Palembang on Tuesday.

The compensation was provided to settle more than 75 thousand claims filed with BPJAMSOSTEK in South Sumatra from August 2021 to August 2022.

Amin also handed over compensation totaling Rp4.4 billion to 10 kin of workers.

The compensation covered work accident security (JKK), death compensation (JKM), pension security (JP) benefits, old-age insurance program (JHT), and education scholarships.

Deputy director of BPJAMSOSTEK for Southern Sumatra region, Eko Purnomo, said that the Vice President's presence showed the government's attention to the welfare of all Indonesian workers through workers' social security provided by BPJAMSOSTEK.

"We are grateful for Mr. Vice President who was present and handed over the compensation directly to the heirs of the (workers' social security) participants. This can be a consolation for all families who are left behind," he added.

Moreover, over the past year, BPJAMSOSTEK has provided education scholarships worth Rp5.1 billion to 1,379 children in South Sumatra, he informed.

Purnomo also said he hoped that the synergy between BPJAMSOSTEK and the local government can continue, especially in efforts to enhance the prosperity of workers in South Sumatra.

The number of workers registered as BPJAMSOSTEK participants in South Sumatra reached 46 percent for wage-receiving workers and 5 percent for non-wage workers as of August 2022.

However, Purnomo said he is optimistic that the number of workers participating in the social security program would increase in line with the local government's support in the implementation of Presidential Instruction No. 2 of 2021 concerning the optimization of the worker's social security program implementation.
