Hence, with contraception, we can maintain pregnancy and prepare every pregnancy with healthy pregnancy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The family planning program is not aimed at stopping pregnancies, but maintaining the health of mothers and children, the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) has said.

Specifically, family planning aims to maintain reproductive health as well as family quality, BKKBN's family planning and reproductive health deputy, Eni Gustina, said during an online event held to mark World Contraception Day on Friday.

While working to develop the country, the government is not solely focusing on the balance of population growth, but also on improving the quality of human resources by eradicating stunting, she added.

Promoting contraception is part of these efforts. Contraception can improve the quality of health of all women and prevent them from contracting reproductive diseases such as cervical cancer.

The use of contraception can reduce maternal mortality and infant mortality rates. Moreover, it can help families to plan a more healthy pregnancy by spacing the birth of each child.

This is meant to allow mothers to rest and focus on recovering their health while also providing optimal and exclusive breast milk to infants.

According to Gustani, one of the causes of death among mothers in Indonesia is hemorrhaging during labor. Lack of blood during pregnancy can also affect the early formation of the placenta within the womb.

If blood is lacking, then the placenta would automatically compensate by attaching itself more tightly to the womb, resulting in higher chances of hemorrhage during labor.

"Hence, with contraception, we can maintain pregnancy and prepare every pregnancy with healthy pregnancy," she remarked.

The agency is continuing to educate and disseminate information on the family planning program based on youth's lifestyles such as through health podcasts and webinars. All family planning knowledge is spread simultaneously on a national scale, she informed.

In addition, this year, the agency is collaborating with the National Defense Force (TNI) to increase the number of contraception users across Indonesia to more than 2.8 million, she added.

The two institutions aim to have 36 million people willing to use contraception or birth control a year. The target has been set based on the requirement in each province, she explained.

"We expect that we can reach the target because we are three months away from the end of 2022, we have to make up for the deficiency," she said.
