Jakarta (ANTARA) - Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono remarked that revitalization of Ciliwung River at the Pasar Baru area, Central Jakarta, aimed to improve the flow of water and prevent flooding during the rainy season.

"It is targeted to be completed in December (2022)," he stated at the Jakarta City Hall here on Wednesday.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast that the peak of the rainy season will occur during the January-February 2023 period and potentially cause flooding.

The revitalization project is conducted by strengthening the river cliffs and increasing the capacity of the river.

According to data from the Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Office, the revitalization project is estimated to cost Rp134.7 billion.

Currently, the project aims to reinforce the cliffs along 1.3 kilometers (km) on both sides of the river.

Furthermore, canals and flood control pumps will be constructed.

The revitalization project is part of the 942 Vertical Drainage project, comprising the construction and rehabilitation of nine polders, four reservoirs, and two creeks of Ciliwung Rivers, as well as the improvement of the vertical drainage system.

In addition to the creek at the Pasar Baru area, revitalization of the creeks will be conducted in the Muara Bahari-Kali Besar area.

Furthermore, revitalization of the polders is implemented at Kelapa Gading, Pulomas, Muara Angke, Teluk Gong, Mangga Dua, Green Garden, Marunda JGC, Tipala-Adhyaksa, as well as Kamal areas.

Meanwhile, the four dam construction projects comprise the Brigif, Pondok Ranggon, Wirajasa, and Lebak Bulus reservoirs.

The Lebak Bulus Reservoir is being built on an area spanning 4.4 hectares (ha), with a capacity of around 44 thousand cubic meters of water.

Brigif Reservoir is being constructed on an area of 10.05 ha that is estimated to accommodate about 380 thousand cubic meters of water.

Meanwhile, the Pondok Ranggon reservoir will have a water capacity of about 890 thousand cubic meters, while the Wirajasa Reservoir has an estimated water capacity of 25 thousand cubic meters.
