Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The South Kalimantan provincial government is finishing preparations for the Pre-National Student Sports Week (Pre-Popnas) Zone III that will be held from October 26 to November 2, 2022.

With the event drawing closer, preparations for welcoming the contingent, the event opening and closing, and the venue readiness are being bolstered, Head of South Kalimantan Youth and Sports Office H. Hermansyah informed here on Friday.

According to him, the office has continued to hold coordination meetings with all involved parties for the final stage of preparations in order to make the Pre-National Student Sports Week a success.

"At today's meeting, we not only invite (officials) from government agencies, but also the police and the event organizer (EO) for the event opening," Hermansyah said on Friday.

South Kalimantan will host Pre-Popnas Zone III, in which seven provinces will participate. The locations for the competition venues will be spread across Banjarmasin and Banjarbaru cities.

The opening of Pre-Popnas will take place at the GOR Hasanuddin HM sports building in Banjarmasin.

Contingents of student-athletes from the provinces of Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Bali, Yogyakarta, Central Java, Banten, and host South Kalimantan will compete in the Pre-Popnas Zone III.

Eight sports will be competed at the Pre-Popnas: basketball, volleyball, badminton, Indonesian martial art pencak silat, football, sepak takraw, tennis, and boxing.

Meanwhile, the communication head of the South Kalimantan Regional Secretariat, Widi Gunawan, suggested organizing a sports-based dance performance, like a breakdance, to enliven the opening.

“So, the sporting impression will not go away,” Gunawan said, adding that journalists and media must support the province's major sporting event.

Earlier, the 2022 Pre-National Student Sports Week Zone IV was held from September 9–16 in East Kalimantan.

The national sports week for students is expected to become a selection event to identify and groom potential young athletes both from regions and nationwide.
