Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA) - The Surabaya City Government, East Java Province, is ramping up efforts to get rid of mosquito nests to thwart the transmission of dengue viruses.

"We are fighting dengue fever, meaning we are removing any accumulation of water in houses and villages. That is where we mobilize togetherness by encouraging and motivating Surabaya health cadres," Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi remarked during the morning routine of the grand movement of eradicating mosquito nests at Thor Field here on Monday.

Cahyadi invited the morning routine participants that comprised local health center (puskesmas) officers, Surabaya health cadres, and students to intensify the eradication of mosquito nests.

"This movement is our foothold to pay attention to your respective environments. If communities do not want to clean waterways, then it can definitely cause dengue fever," he remarked.

He also urged sub-district heads, village heads, and local health center heads to coordinate in the movement to eradicate mosquito nests.

The Surabaya mayor remarked that from the start of 2022 until October 24, 2022, some 187 dengue cases were reported in the city.

"The case count reached 187, so far, with the highest being recorded in February 2022, but Alhamdulillah (Thank God), with the spirit of the RT/RW (neighborhood units/hamlets), LPMK (village-level community empowerment centers), and Surabaya health cadres, can reduce this," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Head of the Surabaya City Health Office Nanik Sukristina remarked that the morning routine, which was attended by 2,799 participants, was aimed at increasing public awareness in supporting efforts to prevent dengue transmission.

In addition to cleaning waterways from mosquito nests, fogging is conducted in a place where a dengue case is found.

"Fogging is an alternative because it can cause resistance to the environment, but we still do it if there is a case," Sukristina remarked.
