"Cyberspace is a new era (domain). This must be understood in order to adapt to this new world of cyberspace," head of the BSSN Hinsa Siburian told Surakarta Public Vocational High School 2 students, here on Tuesday, as part of the "Guarding the Nation’s Cyberspace" campaign.
He underlined the importance of adaptation and upholding culture and manners in cyberspace so that life remains harmonious.
According to him, cyberspace comprises three layers. The physical layer consists of global positioning systems (GPS), satellites, and data centers, while the second layer comprises the logical network or software that operates the exchange and connects data with the first layer, he added.
The second layer, he said, is connected to the third layer or cyberspace participants or human identities.
He said President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has warned that while the cyber world can support welfare, it can also add to threats.
Therefore, the BSSN has been established to protect Indonesians in cyberspace given the risk of cyberattacks.
Cultural values must be maintained and applied in cyberspace, he emphasized. If literacy is not carried out, he said, people would be unaware of cyberspace threats.
He said this would create a situation similar to one in the past, when Indonesia was under colonial rule and subject to the politics of pitting people against each other (adu domba). In the cyberspace era, this can happen because of the massive amount of information that can be accessed by everyone.
Thus, those who lack literacy and understanding could be pitted against each other
"That is the purpose of why we (are trying to increase) literacy. There needs to be adjustment in the cyber world. There are values in the real world that must also be implemented in the cyber world," Siburian said.
