Corruption is an extraordinary crime
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Corruption can cause social and economic losses, such as poverty and inequality, that can pose threats to the life of the nation, according to the Financial Services Authority's (OJK's) Board of Commissioners' Chairman, Mahendra Siregar.

In addition, corrupt practices can become the start of money laundering, in which perpetrators attempt to disguise illegal sources of wealth or transactions and assets they own in order to avoid suspicion of law enforcement officials.

"Corruption is an extraordinary crime. Thus, it must be handled extraordinarily and treated up to the root of the problem," he stated at an event titled "Proactive and Collaborative in Preventing Corruption in Indonesia" followed online on Tuesday.

According to Siregar, the prevention and eradication of criminal acts of corruption cannot be conducted partially or individually by each organization alone but must be done in an integrated manner by all institutions, such as the government and the financial services industry, as well as the entire community.

To this end, the OJK is committed to collaborating and synergizing with all relevant stakeholders to make various efforts to prevent and handle corruption.

Siregar remarked that through the application of governance principles, the role of OJK in preventing corruption in Indonesia is realized through regulation and supervision of the financial services industry.

"The application of governance principles is expected to be able to improve integrity and minimize the risk for occurrence of corruption," he remarked.

Moreover, application of the principles is also expected to improve awareness and understanding for effectively and efficiently conducting mitigation against money laundering in the financial services sector.

On the occasion, he also lauded the implementation of the discussion titled "Proactive and Collaborative in Preventing Corruption in Indonesia" that is part of the main event for the commemoration of International Anti-Corruption Day 2022.
