Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA) - State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Tohir on Tuesday denied a rumor that state firms in the country have suffered losses.

"In the history of this republic, for the first time ever, state-owned companies have consolidated book reports. That's why let us speak with fact and data; don't be trapped in a rumor. (Don't say) according to hearsay from social media," he said during a dialogue with social figures in Padang, West Sumatra.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, state-owned companies posted a combined profit of Rp13 trillion in 2020, he said.

"Maybe because of COVID-19, the state-owned companies' profit jumped to Rp124.7 trillion in the ensuing year (2021),” he added.

In the first nine months of this year, state-owned companies have posted Rp155 trillion in profit, he said.

"So, it is not true that state-owned companies go bankrupt," he added.

In the past three years, state-owned companies have contributed Rp1,198 trillion to the state in the form of taxes, profit, and production sharing, he noted.

"Compared to the three previous years, state-owned companies only contributed Rp1,130 trillion to the state. This means that the profit rose by Rp68 trillion. This is a fact," he said.

He said state-owned companies' debts currently account for 34 percent of their capital.

"So, the capital is larger than debts," he said.

Several state-owned companies are not healthy and their employees have been involved in corruption cases, he added.

"Among them are Jiwasraya, Asabri, pension fund, and Garuda Indonesia and their employees (who were found to be involved in the corruption cases) have been sent to jail," he said.

He added that many state-owned companies still made a profit.
