Cianjur, W Java (ANTARA) - The reconstruction of Cianjur earthquake victims’ homes will be carried out in stages, thus there may be residents who may not receive the assistance at the same time with the others.

The statement was made by head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Lieutenant General Suharyanto, while accompanying Vice President Ma'ruf Amin for a review of the Phase I Relocation Site for the victims at Sinargalih village, Cianjur regency, West Java, on Wednesday.

"We target that Phase III (of the home reconstruction will be started) in January 2023. Later, if there are additions (to the number of houses), at least in February (2023), all the funds should have been disbursed," the BNPB head added.

Still, he said he hoped that the collection of data for the reconstruction of homes has been completed.

"All (the total number of damaged houses has reached) around 60 thousand houses. Meanwhile, (of the total) the heavily damaged are 18 thousand houses," he informed.

The government is providing assistance to people whose homes are in earthquake-safe locations to rebuild their houses at the same locations, while people living in earthquake-prone areas are being provided new housing in the relocation areas, he said.

The aid is being provided by the government based on the extent of damage to each house, with Rp60 million allocated for severely damaged houses, Rp30 million for moderately damaged houses, and Rp15 million for slightly damaged houses.

Suharyanto said that the funds will be disbursed in stages to residents who rebuild their own homes.

Assistance will be provided for the home reconstruction by officials from the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry and the rebuilt houses will be made earthquake-resistant, he added.

Meanwhile, residents who do not have the ability to reconstruct their houses will be assisted by the military, police, BNPB, or third parties who have the capability to build earthquake-resistant homes, he said.

Cianjur Regent Herman Suherman said that his administration is still collecting data for the relocation of houses.

"Tomorrow (on Thursday), we will conduct socialization among residents who will be relocated to this place (the Phase I Relocation Site at Sinargalih village),” he informed.
