Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-run PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BNI) has committed to supporting the journalists’ competence improvement program more actively by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI).

The MoU on BNI Support was inked during an event held to mark the 2023 National Press Day (HPN) in Medan, North Sumatra, on Thursday. It was signed by BNI's institutional banking director, Sis Apik Wijayanto, and the head of PWI, Atal S. Depari.

Wijayanto said that BNI is honored to participate in the media industry’s development through the journalist competence improvement MoU.

BNI believes that the cooperation will help realize more sustainable journalism to support literacy improvement and economic growth optimism.

"We thank PWI for the opportunity to cooperate. We expect that we can continue to establish good cooperation and provide a positive contribution to the development of journalism in Indonesia," he remarked.

The MoU is a form of cooperation between BNI and PWI in the effort to improve the professionalism of journalists and make a positive contribution to the development of the journalistic world in Indonesia.

The MoU’s scope extends to improving cooperation in journalism education and training as well as the development of journalism as a profession, knowledge, and application.

It also covers the dissemination of the literacy media program to build a positive image among the people and the utilization of resources.

BNI believes that the MoU will have a positive impact on the development of journalism as a profession and help people get comprehensive and balanced information.

During the event, President Joko Widodo, who witnessed the MoU inking, urged mainstream media to become a clearing house for information.

This year marks the 28th HPN since its initiation on February 9, 1985. The 2023 HPN is themed "Free Press, Dignified Democracy."
