Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar stated that the collaboration highlighted the importance of working hand-in-hand, as it contributed significantly to the global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by increasingly tapping into the potential of tropical rainforests.
"The main goal of this partnership is to collaborate in supporting the operation plan of the national 2030 FOLU Net Sink, pushing towards NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) Indonesia," Minister Bakar stated here on Friday.
The minister also noted that the collaboration aims to probe for comprehensive techniques, methods, and practices in satellite imaging and its interpretation as a means to map lands.
Collaborative efforts between them include technical dialogue about Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) monitoring systems, exchange of knowledge and experience to improve the systems' integration, as well as collaboration in international forums to address global issues.
In the FOLU Net Sink, they aim to reduce as much as 140 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030.
"Indonesia 2030 FOLU Net Sink is a vital part of Indonesia's efforts to achieve its targets in climate aspects, in accordance with the Paris Agreement," she pointed out.
It also had an important contribution to the progress towards the NDC, as the 2030 FOLU Net Sink target could contribute to an up to 60-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, she added.
"The 2030 FOLU Net Sink also contributes to global efforts to (address) the climate crisis," Bakar elaborated.
The collaboration with WRI is an important measure, and the two entities have achieved a meeting point in terms of technical aspects, she remarked.
President of WRI Ani Dasgupta said he viewed Indonesia's 2030 FOLU Net Sink as an ambitious breakthrough by the government. It reflects the extent of Indonesia's commitment to reduce deforestation that had occurred at a rapid pace in the past few years, he said.
"We expect to synergize these technical efforts together to show Indonesia's progress towards globally crucial climate targets," he noted.
Minister Bakar and Dasgupta inked the memorandum of understanding, here on Friday, at the Manggala Wanabakti building.
