We have received the deadline of December 2023 from the central government
Sorong, SouthwestPapua (ANTARA) - Southwest Papua seeks to develop the Sorong Special Economic Zone (SEZ) by drawing investment to boost economic growth in the new province.

Acting Governor of Southwest Papua Muhammad Musa'ad stated in Sorong, Southwest Papua, on Wednesday that the government was planning to hold a campaign with "Southwest Papua Investment Years" as its slogan to attract investment in the province.

"We already have the SEZ as the instrument and the next thing to do is to bolster our efforts in attracting entities to invest to help develop the economic zone," Musa'ad remarked.

Earlier, the central government had issued an ultimatum to the provincial government that the SEZ status will be revoked if it fails to achieve the target by the end of 2023.

"We have received the deadline of December 2023 from the central government," he stated.

Under the pressure to comply with the ultimatum, the acting governor urged all parties in the province, including district heads, mayor, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), and regional government-owned enterprises (BUMD), to work in synergy to bring in investors, so that the SEZ target could be achieved.

"I invite all heads of governments in Southwest Papua to collaborate in maintaining the SEZ by bringing in investors," Musa'ad remarked.

He highlighted the importance of SEZ by stating that it would be a crucial instrument for economic growth in Southwest Papua.

"The SEZ will help to boost economic growth that in turn will help to lower the unemployment and extreme poverty rate in our province," he affirmed.

According to Government Regulation (PP) No. 31 of 2016, the Sorong SEZ was officially inaugurated on October 11, 2019, and operates on an area of 523.7 hectares.
