Bogor, West Java (ANTARA) - Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, who has been appointed as a presidential candidate for the 2024–2029 leadership period by PDI Perjuangan Party, has expressed his commitment to continuing the work of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"I will continue to carry out the breakthroughs and foundations that have been built by President Jokowi. Only those who commit can continue it," he said after the announcement of his presidential candidacy in Bogor, West Java, on Friday.

Pranowo also thanked the general chair of the PDI Perjuangan Party, Megawati Soekarnoputri, for putting her trust in him and nominating him as a presidential candidate.

"Madam Megawati, thank you. By saying bismillah, by God's willing, I will carry out my responsibility," he remarked.

PDI Perjuangan Party appointed Pranowo as its presidential candidate for 2024–2029 at the 140th “PDI Perjuangan DPP Meeting Expanded by Three Pillars,” held with the agenda of internal consolidation, and Eid al-Fitr 1444 H gathering at the Batu Tulis Palace, Bogor, West Java.

"I appoint the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo, as a cadre and party officer to increase his assignment as a presidential candidate for the Republic of Indonesia from the PDI Perjuangan Party," Soekarnoputri said.

Registrations for the presidential and vice presidential candidates are scheduled to open on October 19, 2023, and close on November 25.

Based on Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections (General Election Law), presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs are proposed by political parties or coalitions of political parties that have secured at least 20 percent of the total seats in the House of Representatives (DPR) in the elections or have obtained 25 percent of valid votes nationally in the previous parliamentary elections.

Currently, there are 575 seats in parliament, therefore, the presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs in the 2024 Presidential Election must have the support of at least 115 seats from DPR. Candidate pairs can also be proposed by political parties or coalitions that participated in the 2019 elections and secured a minimum total of 34,992,703 valid votes.
