Labuan Bajo, E Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - President of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Puan Maharani shared five recommendations outlined in the AIPA Message for creating a stable and prosperous Southeast Asia at the ASEAN-AIPA Leaders' Interface Meeting here on Wednesday.

"First, Southeast Asian countries should maintain peace, unity, centrality, and vitality of ASEAN as factors that ensure stability and prosperity in the region," she said.

Furthermore, she noted that it is important to encourage strong and sustainable economic growth in the region while increasing ASEAN's resilience against and response to energy and food security issues for facing the dynamic regional and global situation.

The third recommendation is promoting green economy and investment as well as encouraging sustainable economic stability, in accordance with the legal agreements and policies of ASEAN.

The next recommendation is increasing the institutional efficiency of ASEAN and its partners, including AIPA, the AIPA president, who is also serving as the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), said.

"In addition, the fifth one is to encourage innovation, transfer, application, and development of science as well as technology for sustainable growth and development," she added.

The ASEAN-AIPA Leaders' Interface Meeting is among the series of meetings of the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai district, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province. The summit is being held from May 9 to 11, 2023.

Maharani also emphasized AIPA's commitment, as a parliamentary forum for ASEAN countries, to support ASEAN in addressing the post-COVID-19 economic recovery, climate change, energy and food crises, as well as geopolitical tensions.

Earlier on Tuesday (May 9), she chaired a preparation meeting held to draft the AIPA Message.

The AIPA president emphasized that the ASEAN-AIPA Leaders' Interface Meeting is an important communication and cooperation platform for state and parliamentary leaders of ASEAN countries to find solutions to various regional issues.

“I believe that inter-parliamentary dialogue involving various countries in the (Southeast Asian) region will help increase trust between the countries,” she said.

While inaugurating the ASEAN-AIPA Leaders' Interface Meeting on Wednesday, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the role of parliament is indispensable in preparing the ASEAN 2045 agenda.
