Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - In the period from January to May 19, 2023, the Bali Immigration Office has deported 123 foreign nationals from 35 countries.

"They have violated either laws or norms in Bali," Head of the Immigration Division at the Bali Office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Barron Ichsan informed in Denpasar, Bali, on Monday.

He delivered the statement at a meeting of the foreign nationals’ monitoring team.

According to immigration data, after Bali opened its gates to international visitors in May–December 2022, 194 foreign nationals were deported from the island, he noted.

The reasons for their deportation included violations related to visiting permits, such as performing activities outside of what is allowed or overstaying their visit, as well as committing crimes and violating the norms in Bali, he elaborated.

Ichsan said that some foreign nationals were from Russia, Nigeria, and Ukraine.

It is expected that disciplining the foreign nationals would serve as a reminder for others to behave properly in Bali so as to maintain the quality of tourism on the island, he added.

Ichsan listed some of Bali's significant issues related to foreign tourists, including some low-income foreign tourists exhibiting bad manners.

"Of course, we want to change this by disciplining foreign tourists, so as to promote more visits from international tourists of high quality," Ichsan said.

He urged the team to forge collaboration with authorities in the effort to improve the quality of Bali's tourism.

Head of the operation bureau at the Bali Police Department, Senior Commissioner Nuryanto, said that many of the foreign nationals violated traffic rules, such as, not using standard-issue helmets and using vehicles with fake license plates.

He called for collaboration and participation from the relevant stakeholders to address the issues.

Currently, the Bali government is formulating a regulation to impose a limit on the international visitor quota to attract more tourists of good quality.

"Such control of tourists is meant to limit (visitors) so that the tourism (sector is not overwhelmed), like what we see in some cases lately. Hence, there will be a quota system for international tourists who visit Bali," Bali Governor Wayan Koster said some time ago.

The regulation will outline certain things, such as the limit on foreign tourist visits as well as the minimum funds that tourists will need to have in their bank accounts prior to visiting Bali, he added.
