"It is on the way. Hopefully, it can be finished at the end of this month. End of (June) at most," Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Wahyu Sakti Trenggono said in Kebumen, Central Java, on Tuesday, during a visit to a shrimp cultivation pond.
He informed that the policy will take effect in the first zone (Karimata Strait, Natuna Sea, North Natuna Sea), second zone (Sulawesi Seas and north of Halmahera Island; Cenderawasih Bay and the Pacific Ocean), third zone (Tomini Bay, Maluku Sea, Halmahera Sea, Seram Sea, Berau Bay, Aru Sea, Arafuru Sea, and east of Timor Sea, Tolo Bay, Banda Sea), and fourth zone (Indian Ocean, Sawu Sea, and west of Timor Sea).
The ministry is preparing a regulation derived from Government Regulation Number 11, which will also outline its technical aspects, such as the fishing quota, methods, as well as calculation, Trenggono elaborated.
"We have to think what the derived item will (look like), consider suggestions, how to inform to fishery sector players in the region (about the policy) so they can synchronize with central (government)," the minister said.
The government regulation took a long time—about two years—to formulate before it was eventually ratified on March 6, he informed.
He said he expects that the policy will create a better national fisheries management scene in the future.
"No more complaints, for example, on subsidized fuel, subsidized diesel. I expect that in an area, in one fisheries management area, we already have data on how many fishermen are there, the facilities, so in that place, there will only be super rich or prosperous ones, none (struggling)," he added.
He deemed the measured fishing policy necessary to maintain the fish population.
Trenggono also informed that there will be three types of fishing quotas outlined in the regulation: quota for fishermen, quota for locals, and quota for educative purposes and hobbyists.
