Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has pressed for speeding the reduction of stunting on the Riau Islands, during a visit to Kasih Ibu II integrated health post (posyandu) in Ekang Anculai Village, Teluk Sebong Sub-district, Bintan District on Thursday.

"The condition of the development of stunting on Riau Islands has relatively declined. In 2022, it was at 15.4 percent, then declined by 2.23 percentage points to 13.2 percent in 2023," he said.

To this end, Amin continues to encourage regional governments and stakeholders to routinely carry out the dissemination of information on reducing stunting among children on Riau Islands.

He encouraged the community to consume nutritious foods, such as fish, milk, and other nutritious foods for under-five children that can improve their nutrition.

During his visit, Amin saw the development and the number of under-five children at the posyandu and the availability of anthropometric equipment there.

Apart from that, he also stated that if poverty is one of the causes behind stunting on Riau Islands, a solution needs to be sought.

Meanwhile, Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad, who accompanied Amin during the visit, noted that currently, stunting on Riau Islands is the fourth lowest in Indonesia and the second lowest in Sumatra.

"Riau Islands continues to perform interventions to reduce stunting. So far, the reduction has reached 2.23 percentage points," he said.

In addition, he stated that there has been a decline in maternal mortality and infant mortality rates.

The Government of Riau Islands Province continues to provide multivitamins to babies, iron supplements to pregnant women, F-100 for malnourished under-five children, supplementary food for mothers and babies, and milk for children.

The government also provides Rp5 million (around US$336) in financial aid to each posyandu in the province.

"The district/city governments provide incentives to posyandu cadres for efforts to prevent and reduce stunting in Riau Islands," he stated.

On that occasion, the vice president also distributed family logistic aid packages to residents of Ekang Anculai Village.
