Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has called on regional governments to oversee environmental governance in the framework of implementing a carbon economic value (CEV) in Indonesia.

"I entrust the local government bureaucracy with overseeing environmental management," KLHK Minister Siti Nurbaya said in a statement released in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The government has regulated the CEV through Presidential Regulation Number 98 of 2022, along with implementing regulations in the form of Minister of KLHK Regulation Number 21 of 2022 regarding Procedures for Implementing Carbon Economic Value and Number 7 of 2023 on Procedures for Trading Carbon in the Forestry Sector.

Environmental governance is a set of values that comprise rules, practices, policies, institutions, and others that shape human interaction with the environment.

Nurbaya emphasized that good environmental governance considers the roles of actors who have an impact on the environment.

"Collaboration between the central government, local governments, the private sector, and the community is necessary to carry out good environmental management for government effectiveness and to move towards a sustainable future," she affirmed.

Several keys in environmental governance include embedding environmental aspects in decision-making at various levels and in real actions.

It also involves conceptualizing areas and communities economically and politically as part of the environment, and emphasizing the relationship between communities and the ecosystems in which they live. Additionally, it encourages steps towards circular or recycling systems instead of direct disposal.

Furthermore, another aspect is protecting the environment and controlling it from destructive forces, including the impacts of climate change.

Nurbaya highlighted environmental governance principles, sustainable forest management principles, and carbon governance principles used to protect the environment and control it from destructive forces, including the impacts of climate change.

The government adheres to the Constitutional Act of 1945 concerning environmental management and sustainable development.

Commitment to the international community is also carried out in accordance with the spirit stated in the opening of the Constitutional Act of 1945, in which Indonesia participates in carrying out world order.

"We also benefit from foreign technical cooperation, knowledge, technology, and funding," she stated.
