In a statement received in Labuan Bajo on Wednesday, National Police's (Polri's) International Relations Division Head Inspector General Krishna Murti stated that Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo handed over the chairmanship to Lieutenant General Vilay Lakhamphong, Laotian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security.
Murti extended Polri's appreciation to all delegates participating in a series of activities at the 17th AMMTC, adding that under Indonesia's chairmanship this year, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has succeeded in conducting various fruitful transnational crime-related activities.
The activities included the 23rd Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) that was held in Yogyakarta in June this year, in addition to the 17th AMMTC.
Murti then expressed hope that Laos would succeed in hosting the 24th SOMTC and 18th AMMTC that are expected to produce various creative and productive ideas aimed at combating transnational crimes in the Southeast Asian region.
Furthermore, he noted that on Monday (August 21), the second day of the 17th AMMTC, General Prabowo and Lieutenant General Lakhamphong had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of cooperation in preventing and combating transnational crimes and conducting capacity-building activities.
Both figures inked the MoU after the plenary session of the 17th AMMTC.
Murti also elaborated that Indonesia and Laos had earlier signed a similar MoU several years ago.
The MoU, which was renewed in 2019, encourages both parties to work hand in hand to build their capacity in tackling cross-border crimes, such as drugs and arms smuggling, terrorism, human trafficking, crimes in the digital space, money laundering, and crimes related to the international economy.
