The ministry's deputy for environmental and forestry management coordination, Nina Hendiarti, on Tuesday said that the target can be achieved if supported by various partners.
"Last year, we were able to reduce 36 percent. So every year, the reduction must increase by 8 percent. With support from other partners, it can reach 10 percent. We are optimistic that the target of 70 percent by 2025 will be achieved," she stated after attending the ASEAN Conference for Combating Plastic Pollution (ACCPP) in Jakarta.
According to Hendiarti, the strategy to achieve the 70-percent reduction in marine plastic debris is to collaborate with 18 ministries and institutions and other stakeholders.

The strategy has several main pillars, namely, changing community behavior, improving waste management on land and waters, funding and law enforcement mechanisms, and innovation, she said.
"Now we have many young people developing innovations. They come up with ideas to create start-ups (to solve the problem of marine plastic waste)," she added.
She said that Southeast Asian countries must play a role in reducing marine plastic waste in order to compete with developed countries.
Indonesia is firmly committed to showing real action in reducing marine plastic waste. Therefore, through ACCPP, Indonesia has asked ASEAN countries to exchange views and find solutions for handling regional marine waste, she informed.
"We want to invite ASEAN countries to carry out several efforts together to handle this problem. We hope that the collaboration can (help us) motivate each other and accommodate policies, thoughts, experiences, and best practices exchange within ASEAN countries," Hendiarti said.
