"Diabetes prevention needs to be done at the local level. People can check blood sugar levels at local health centers. If levels exceed 200 mg/dL, they will get free medication," he stated in a written announcement on Sunday.
During his official visit to Ampana Regional General Hospital in Tojo Una-Una on Saturday (January 6), he emphasized maximizing blood sugar check services using the available hemato analyzer as a key preventive measure.
This test is crucial for monitoring blood sugar levels, he said, noting that high levels often indicate diabetes.
He emphasized the efficiency and effectiveness of this approach compared to managing diabetes in hospitals. Early detection through low-cost hematology analyzer tests helps not only control diabetes at its onset but also reduces hospital patient load.
"Implementing this can prevent hospital transfers and alleviate overcrowding. This can be managed at local health centers as it is more cost-effective," he remarked.
Data from the Tojo Una-Una District Health Office showed that the number of diabetics in 2023 reached 9,775 people, with only 4,248 people receiving treatment, raising fears of worsening conditions.
Ampana Hospital Director Niko confirmed the high diabetes rate and lack of HbA1c testing facilities in Tojo Una-Una, contributing to the hospital's full in-patient rooms.
