Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) awarded the Adipura Kencana 2023 to the cities of Balikpapan, Surabaya, Bontang, and Bitung and Ciamis District for their good performances in environmental management.

“In Adipura 2023, field monitoring will be carried out in 259 districts and cities throughout Indonesia, or approximately 50.39 percent of the 514 districts and cities in Indonesia,” Minister of LHK Siti Nurbaya stated at the 2023 Adipura Cup Awards ceremony monitored online from Jakarta, Tuesday.

According to Nurbaya, those five places were selected, as they demonstrated good environmental management performance in the form of waste management and green open spaces. They also do it in innovative and sustainable ways.

Adipura Kencana is the highest award given to districts and cities in a series of awards for districts and cities in Indonesia that are successful in cleanliness and management of the urban environment.

On that occasion, apart from giving the Adipura Kencana Award, KLHK also conferred the Adipura Award to 106 districts and cities that were able to provide good urban environmental management performance in 2023.

KLHK also awarded Adipura Certificates to 51 districts and cities, as they were deemed to have made efforts to manage waste from the source.

Nurbaya explained that the 2023 Adipura results had shown significant progress as compared to the previous year, with an increase in the number of regions receiving the Adipura Award by 32.5 percent.

"From 80 districts and cities last year to 106 districts and cities this year. In addition, based on the results of the assessment carried out in Adipura 2023, some 63 regions experienced an increase in waste management performance as compared to the previous year," Nurbaya stated.
