"We have detected 3,235 hoaxes in total, with 1,971 of them having been taken down," Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi revealed during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He explained that Kominfo had decided to simply label the remaining misleading contents as "hoax" since they did not contain critically dangerous false information.
He noted that the hoaxes containing provocative and false narratives were evenly spread on a range of social media platforms and search engines.
Setiadi remarked that, based on the data, 92 percent of the hoaxes were broadcast by social media buzzers affiliated with certain groups.
The government's ongoing monitoring efforts have helped maintain a positive environment on social media, he stated.
He affirmed that Kominfo would continue to screen election-related hoaxes circulating on social media even after the inauguration of the next president and vice president.
