Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Religious Affairs on Sunday has launched a workout routine for pilgrims of the 2024 Hajj, especially those who are older adults, to maintain fitness.

The workout routine was launched simultaneously in various regions involving 28 thousand prospective Hajj pilgrims. The launch event was centralized at Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory, Jakarta.

“The launch of the Hajj workout (routine) is part of efforts to maintain the pilgrims’ fitness so that they can carry out all series of Hajj worship activities smoothly,” the ministry’s Secretary General M. Ali Ramdhani said.

He noted that the government pays special attention to the health factor in this year's Hajj pilgrimage.

There are at least two reasons why the health factor receives attention from the government. First, Indonesia's Hajj pilgrim quota reaches 241 thousand people this year, the country's biggest quota so far.

"Of the number, more than 45 thousand people are in the elderly category," he added.

Furthermore, the second reason is that there were more than 770 Indonesian pilgrims who died in last year's pilgrimage, which is the country's highest in the past 10 years.

"The health of Hajj pilgrims is a concern. We want Hajj pilgrims to depart in good health, be able to perform the Hajj well, and return to the country in good health," he said.

Meanwhile, the ministry's Director General of Hajj and Umrah Hilman Latief stated that the workout routine was designed with low-impact movements by a team from the Indonesian Hajj Doctors Association (Perdokhi) and the Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists (Perdosri).

Despite being low impact, the movements are expected to help the pilgrims stay fit during the worship activities.
