Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Directorate General of National Export Development (PEN) of the Trade Ministry has selected Morocco as a hub for the African market.

"We choose Morocco as a hub for the African market," PEN director general Didi Sumedi informed on Friday.

According to him, the ministry carried out a trade mission to Morocco, resulting in potential transactions of US$16.98 million, or the equivalent of Rp276 billion.

"As our first breakthrough, we have generated this potential transaction," Sumedi said.

By choosing Morocco as a hub, his party is aiming to increase the penetration of Indonesian exports into the African market.

"Even though in Africa we already have the Indonesia Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in two countries, namely Nigeria and South Africa, we still want to surround Africa with three hubs. We saw a great potential in the continent where the demand is in line with our domestic products," he informed.

Morocco is important for Indonesia, especially in its role as a non-traditional trading partner and as a hub for entering the North African market.

There is still considerable potential for cooperation between Indonesia and Morocco. Currently, the two countries are formulating a preferential trade agreement (PTA), which is expected to serve as a catalyst to increase trade value in the North African region.

Trade mission activities to Morocco also aim to strengthen the penetration of Indonesian products into the North African market. Further, they support the target to build business cooperation by connecting Indonesian business actors with potential partners from Morocco and surrounding countries, Sumedi said.

He informed that the ministry is encouraging the development of exports, including to the African region as a potential market for Indonesian products.

Moreover, the ministry is continuously striving to support business actors, especially those who can contribute to Indonesia's export performance, he added.
