Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with the Jakarta Provincial Government and state-run railway company PT KAI, is currently working on the expansion of Tanah Abang Train Station to improve services for passengers.

"We, together with the Jakarta Provincial Government and PT KAI, aim to elevate the quality of services offered to passengers at the Tanah Abang Station in the aspects of convenience, comfort, and accessibility," the ministry's Director General of Railways Risal Wasal remarked here on Sunday.

He said the Tanah Abang Station expansion project is set to conclude by the end of this year.

"The construction of physical structures of the Tanah Abang Station has been underway and is targeted to be completed by the end of this year," he pointed out.

According to him, the project encompasses the development of a new station building, the increase of railway tracks from four to six, the increase of platforms from two to four, and the arrangement of intermodal integration facilities.

The addition of two railway tracks at the station will cut the headway in the Serpong line, from seven minutes to three minutes.

Moreover, the expansion project is also expected to enable the train station to accommodate passengers three times higher, from 100 thousand to 300 thousand on a daily basis.

In the project, the Transportation Ministry is responsible for constructing the new station building and additional tracks, improving operational facilities and equipment, and building a pedestrian bridge above the tracks.

"The Jakarta administration is widening (access) roads and developing intermodal integration facilities," Wasal said, adding that PT KAI is developing the parking area, a plaza, canopies, and improving the e-ticketing system.

He noted that the main building of the station would be expanded to cover 12,000 square meters of land. The building will be equipped with a commercial area and also facilities dedicated to persons with disabilities.
