Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the actualization of quality journalism in Indonesia, as a democratic country.

"The Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs supports all measures for paving a path for quality journalism for the sake of the democratic way of life of our nation," he noted in a press release received from the ministry here on Wednesday.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Press Council in his office on Tuesday (May 7), Tjahjanto remarked that the steps to support quality journalism is implementing Presidential Regulation No.32 of 2024 on digital platform companies' responsibility to support quality journalism.

He elaborated that the presidential regulation mandates the establishment of a committee whose members should comprise experts that will be tasked with conducting surveillance in a bid to support quality journalism.

He further explained that the experts involved should be knowledgeable about digital technology. Thus, the committee will be capable of properly overseeing digital platform companies in producing quality journalistic products, he added.

"Therefore, we should apply some criteria for the selection of the experts. For instance, they need to possess expertise at arbitration, internet or algorithm, and digital platforms," he remarked.

Tjahjanto then suggested that the Press Council take prompt steps to decide on the structure of the committee and form other necessary formal organizations.

The minister also stated that his side had been in coordination with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics to pick some ministerial officials to join the committee.

The minister is upbeat that the awaited establishment of the committee would encourage all digital platform companies to act more responsibly in producing enlightening journalistic products.
