The effort was carried out to expand the job market for Indonesian migrant workers (PMIs) in Macau.
"This activity is our joint effort to obtain specific information on formal sector employment opportunities for Indonesian migrant workers who have an interest in working in Macau," Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah said on Friday.
Currently, Hong Kong and Macau, which are special administrative regions of China, are the main destinations for PMI placements, she informed.
In the January–February 2024 period, there were 16,076 Indonesian migrant workers, or 31.54 percent of the national total, working in Hong Kong, followed by Taiwan (14,023) and Malaysia (10,988), she added.
According to Fauziyah, Macau is an attractive country for PMIs, with 6,402 of them currently working there. Indonesians make up the 4th largest migrant worker population in Macau after that of Mainland China, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
She then outlined several factors that attract migrant workers' interest in working in Hong Kong and Macau, such as good income and stable working conditions.
"Our migrant workers' interest in working in Hong Kong is also high. This was caused by the role of the government and mutually beneficial cooperation in the employment sector," the minister said.
Fauziyah added that Hong Kong and Macau offer many job opportunities suitable for Indonesian migrant workers in several sectors, such as transportation (ferries and airlines), hospitality (hotels, restaurants, shopping centers), health, real estate, tourism, and education, among others.
"Therefore, we ask the support between stakeholders, both stakeholders in Indonesia and the Hong Kong-Macau/Chinese government through Indonesian representatives, to jointly look at and explore these opportunities seriously," she said.
