"Today, the people of Pekanbaru city have a centralized wastewater management system (IPAL) to treat wastewater in the city," he announced at a live broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Friday.
Jokowi added that the wastewater management system could protect the water environment, maintain groundwater quality, and maintain raw water in Pekanbaru.
The wastewater management system was installed by the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry at a total cost of Rp902 billion (US$53 million), and financed from various sources, namely the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the state budget, and the regional budget, he informed.
"A project should be like this. All elements work to complete the goal," he emphasized.
The head of state informed that the IPAL has a water volume capacity of 8 thousand cubic meters per day, with the pipe network reaching 11 thousand house connections.
He then asked for the proper infrastructure utilization of the IPAL to maintain the quality of raw water and water services in the city.
"We can manage the raw water and water quality in Pekanbaru for the future," he said.
At the inauguration, the President was accompanied by PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono; head of the National Food Agency, Arief Prasetyo Adi; acting governor of Riau, S.F. Hariyanto; and acting mayor of Pekanbaru, Risnandar Mahiwa.
Besides inaugurating the wastewater infrastructure, the President was also scheduled to open the Pekanbaru-Padang Toll Road, Bangkinang-Pangkalan section, Bangkinang-XIII Koto Kampar section, and inaugurate the implementation of the Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads in Riau Province.
He was then scheduled to leave for Dumai city from Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport.
