Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Informatics is providing digital forensic laboratory services to government agencies and the general public in need of digital evidence for legal purposes.

"The procedure is simple, they only need to submit a letter and convey their needs; for example, to sue someone or to recover photos. However, it is only for legal purposes," the ministry's director of application control, Teguh Arifiyadi, informed here on Friday.

The letter can be submitted to the ministry's Directorate of Application Control and addressed to the Digital Forensic Laboratory, second floor, Ministry of Communication and Informatics building, Jakarta.

Letters requesting digital forensic laboratory services can be submitted on behalf of an individual or by the lawyer of the digital forensic examination applicant.

According to Arifiyadi, the digital forensics laboratory can check the authenticity of conversations on electronic devices and examine digital devices, among other things.

Some of the services are being offered for free while some require payment. The service fee is adjusted to the level of difficulty and duration of the examination.

"Actually, they are open for the community. Regarding the cost, it is very relative, depending on what the need is," he informed.

For example, he said, checking the authenticity of conversations from digital device screenshots is relatively cheap, and sometimes, free of charge.

Meanwhile, data recovery services are usually chargeable because they require extra effort.

He said that the digital forensics laboratory of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics meets the international standard ISO 17025.

The laboratory can examine at least 500 pieces of evidence for judicial purposes annually.
