Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology called on higher education institutions in Indonesia to have more international partners to conduct research to increase their ranks globally.

"The hope is to enter the world's top 200," the ministry's Director General of Higher Education Abdul Haris stated on the sidelines of the Digital Universities Asia 2024 international conference in Nusa Dua, Badung, Bali, on Tuesday.

Haris noted that collaboration with international partners or universities is expected to help improve the quality of research of local researchers or academicians.

Currently, the University of Indonesia (UI) is the only university in the country ranked 801–1,000th globally in 2024 based on Times Higher Education.

In Asia, UI is ranked 201–250th in the Asia University Rankings 2024, while for the Impact Rankings 2024, UI is placed 31st.

"This is a challenge because the focus is on research power; (it is) the main metric," he remarked.

Meanwhile, on the same occasion, UI Rector Ari Kuncoro stated that UI is targeting to enter the top 500 world ranking.

To achieve this goal, collaboration with reputed world universities is deemed necessary, such as through student exchange or research with alumni of the world's top universities and the Indonesian diaspora.

Kuncoro emphasized that universities also need to adapt in the era of disruption, such as by adapting to advancements in information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), automation, digitalization, and robotic technology.

UI is hosting the Digital Universities Asia 2024 themed "Inclusive Education for The Digital Age" on July 1-3 in Badung.

The conference discusses several topics, including the utilization of AI technology and other innovations in inclusive learning.
