Manokwari, West Papua (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has said that the implementation of the Merdeka (Independent) Curriculum in frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged (3T) regions will be carried out in stages.

"Education units in 3T areas will be allowed to use the old curriculum until 2028. Currently, it is still the transition period," a staff at the ministry's Curriculum and Learning Center, Farah Arriani, said here on Thursday.

She informed that the ministry has launched the Awan Penggerak application to enhance the competence of educational workers in regions that are constrained by Internet access.

The app provides information about the Merdeka Curriculum, for example, the Merdeka Teaching Platform (PMM), which can be accessed by educational units.

"The Awan Penggerak app not only provides information in the form of a platform, but also various resource persons who apply good practices that can be accessed by schools in 3T regions," Arriani said.

According to her, the Merdeka Curriculum is more focused on essential materials and adjusting learning and teaching activities at schools to each student's potential.

For this reason, she said, schools must carry out an assessment to obtain data and information on students' learning activities before implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. "So they can find out what students need," she added.

Meanwhile, she said, the previous 2013 education curriculum put more emphasis on basic competencies based on the students' level.

Head of the West Papua Center of Teachers as Mobilizers (BGP), Tuning Supriyadi, said that the use of the Awan Penggerak App will continue to be optimized through periodic mentoring of teachers in remote areas.

The assistance will be provided as a follow-up to a training in December 2023 to improve teachers' ability to operate Chromebooks to access the app.

"After the training, we monitor the implementation in schools that do not have an Internet network," Supriyadi said.
