"The target of zakat, infaq, and donation collection is Rp100 trillion in the next five years," the ministry's Director General of Islamic Community Guidance, Kamaruddin Amin, remarked here on Tuesday.
Amin delivered this statement at the kick-off event of the Zakat and Waqf Empowerment Program at the Religious Affairs Ministry building in Jakarta.
He highlighted that the collection of zakat grew by around Rp10 trillion annually. In 2023, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, through various philanthropic institutions, such as the National Zakat Amil Agency (BAZNAS) and private zakat agencies (LAZ), raised Rp31 trillion.
Based on this positive trend, Amin believed that zakat collection could reach Rp100 trillion in the next five years. Moreover, the potential of zakat, infaq, and donation collection touches Rp400 trillion if they can be absorbed optimally.
"By involving BAZNAS and LAZ throughout Indonesia, zakat will be an instrument to alleviate poverty in Indonesia," he stated.
Meanwhile, he noted that the ministry had launched the cash waqf program for civil servants within the ministry. In just 10 days, the program collected Rp4 billion, or around US$247 thousand.
Based on this result, Amin remarked that the program can be promoted on a national scale. If 100 million Muslims in Indonesia participate, and each person was to give Rp10 thousand, then the total would amount to Rp1 trillion.
"Hopefully, this can be realized as our collective movement," he remarked.
He noted that the collected alms and donations will be processed to fund various forms of productive community empowerment instruments, such as in the education, health, and economic sectors.
