Surakarta, Central Java (ANTARA) - Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Tuesday tendered his resignation as mayor of Surakarta, Central Java, to the city's Legislative Council (DPRD) to focus on his leadership transition.

He will assume the vice presidency on October 20, 2024, the same day Prabowo Subianto will be inaugurated as the Indonesian President. Gibran and Prabowo won the presidential election on February 14 after garnering more than 58 percent of the votes polled.

"I have delivered my resignation letter, which will be followed up by the DPRD Speaker, then (it will be forwarded) to the provincial authority and the Home Ministry," Gibran told the press after handing over his resignation letter.

He said that he needs to prepare various aspects before his inauguration as Vice President, including handing over the mayor's official residence, the Loji Gandrung, and his office at Surakarta city hall to his successor.

The Vice President-elect expressed his gratitude to the media for helping oversee the works of the municipal authority and covering events in the city. He also appealed for support and prayers for a smooth leadership transition.

"Thank you for being my best friend and reporting positive aspects of Surakarta city development. I apologize for any mistakes," he said.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Surakarta's regional legislature, Budi Prasetyo, said that he will deliberate on the resignation letter with the DPRD leadership for follow-up measures.

Prasetyo informed that he will adjust this month's legislature agenda for the plenary session to approve Gibran's resignation. The plenary session resolution will be forwarded to the Home Ministry, he added.

"The Home Ministry will then issue their resolution to discharge (Gibran from the mayorship) and appoint the deputy mayor as the acting mayor," he added.
