Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, expressed optimism that the Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Forum (IAPF) will enhance relations between Indonesia and African countries.

The IAPF will be held in Bali from August 31 to September 2, with the theme "Strengthening the Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Partnership for Development."

"I am confident that the IAPF can add value to the relationship between Indonesia and African countries," Maharani said in a statement on Friday.

"Added value" will be achieved if the parliaments of Indonesia and African countries increase cooperation, she added.

"This added value will be realized if the IAPF contributes to fulfilling the aspirations of the people in Africa and Indonesia, so that the welfare of people in both regions can be achieved," she continued.

Additionally, Maharani mentioned that the IAPF could help make Indonesia's relationship with Africa more inclusive.

"It also means reaching out to the wider community, as the parliament represents the people," she added.

She noted that the IAPF is evidence of Indonesia's commitment to being at the forefront of efforts to build a better world. The forum is also expected to produce concrete measures for the progress of participating countries.

"And this aligns with the spirit of our predecessors, who took part in the Asian-African Conference 69 years ago in fostering brotherhood and solidarity among Asian and African nations. We, as successors, must continue to uphold these ideals," she added.

The relationship between Indonesia and African nations dates back to the 1955 Asian-African Conference and received a further boost during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in 1961.
