Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has appointed Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, as the acting minister of social affairs.

Effendy replaces Tri Rismaharini, who resigned from her post to run in the East Java gubernatorial election in November.

"The president has appointed Minister Effendy as the acting minister of social affairs until the appointment of a definitive minister," said Ari Dwipayana, coordinator of the president's advisors, on Friday.

He explained that Rismaharini's dismissal from her position as minister of social affairs was stipulated in a presidential decree, which was issued following her resignation request.

Earlier in the day, President Jokowi stated that he had approved Rismaharini's resignation from her position.

"She submitted her resignation, and I signed it," he remarked.
