Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has officially regulated the handling, utilization, and trade of kratom, according to a trade official.

Two trade ministerial regulations have been implemented to increase the added value and marketability of Indonesian kratom exports.

"Kratom exports must comply with predetermined standards in order to increase added value and provide legal certainty," said Director General of Foreign Trade Isy Karim in a statement from the Ministry of Trade on Monday.

Kratom exports will be subject to standard export requirements, including being free from microbiological contamination, heavy metals, and adulteration.

Karim clarified that the regulations apply specifically to kratom exports and do not regulate domestic use. The regulations also aim to prevent the misuse of kratom.

One regulation outlines the prohibited types and sizes of kratom products for export, while the other specifies the requirements for exporters and the permitted types, shapes, and sizes of kratom products.

Kratom is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Its leaves have been used traditionally for centuries in the region as a stimulant and pain reliever.
