Gorontalo (ANTARA) - The Gorontalo government is committed to promoting sign language rights, ensuring that people with hearing impairments have a voice in the province's development, an official said.

During the commemoration of International Sign Language Day in Gorontalo on Sunday, Regional Secretary Sofian Ibrahim emphasized that the event should serve as a momentum for the government and all sectors of society to promote the use of sign language.

"People with hearing impairments have the same rights to communicate, interact, and socialize with others. That is why we need to learn sign language," he said.

Ferlan S. Ibrahim, head of the local branch of the Indonesian Association for the Welfare of the Hearing Disabled (Gerkatin), highlighted that the commemoration aims to introduce sign language to a broader audience.

"Hopefully, through this event, the community will become more aware of, understand, and respect both people with hearing impairments and the use of sign language," he said.

The event, themed "Hands Speak, Eyes Speak, We Are Equal," featured performances, including sign language poetry readings.
