"The Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) data shows that mental health disorders rank second highest among health problems in people aged 20–37 years," acting head of the public health section of the Jakarta Health Office, Sri Puji Wahyuni, said here on Friday.
Meanwhile, mental health disorders rank fifth among health problems in people aged 40–59, she added.
According to Wahyuni, it is important to prioritize educational and preventive efforts rather than rehabilitative and curative measures to maintain workers' mental health.
This is because preventive measures are considered more effective and make problems easier to treat or manage.
Wahyuni said that promotive and preventive measures to maintain employees' mental health in workplace environments can start with building openness to discuss problems.
"We have to start seeing mental health problems as common as physical health in general," she added.
If workers feel down mentally, they can try to manage or seek help, she suggested.
The Jakarta provincial government is providing mental health providers, including psychologists at health centers, psychiatrists at regional general hospitals (RSUD), and clinical psychologists at hospitals.
"We are training cadres to learn first aid for mental problems. We will probably bolster this training next year," Wahyuni said.
In addition, the provincial government is running the E-Jiwa application, which can be used by residents to check their mental health and thereafter, visit health centers or hospitals for a consultation.
