Offering coding as a school subject is a good idea that will help Indonesia catch up with other countries, he said.
"We also need to introduce diverse subjects to students," he remarked during the Independent Campus Program event at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Yudhoyono affirmed his commitment to advancing education as the main driver for creating superior and quality human resources, adding that this approach will help Indonesia become a strong nation.
However, he emphasized that the education provided must keep pace with current developments and that the government must continue working on the right formula for learning.
"Of course, we want improvements in education and infrastructure to reach both cities and villages," he said.
Earlier, during the Coordination Meeting on the Evaluation of Primary and Secondary Education Policies on Monday, Vice President Gibran expressed his wish to add coding as a subject in elementary or junior high schools.
He said that this step is important for Indonesia to compete with other countries, such as India, which has developed a large pool of technology experts.
Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti affirmed that his ministry plans to offer artificial intelligence (AI) and coding as optional subjects in schools.
"For the future curriculum update, we are planning to add AI and coding as optional subjects in schools that can implement them," he said on Monday.
